About Weyni Kahsay
If we don't preserve our stories, someone else will write them for us.

Weyni Kahsay was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Her family is originally from Asmara, Eritrea which is located in the horn of Africa. She graduated from the University of North Texas with a B.F.A in New Media Arts., B.F.A in Painting and Drawing, and a minor in Art History. New Media is a broad art field focused on Conceptual Art. These degrees allowed her to experiment with different mediums on a conceptual level.
As an interdisciplinary conceptual visual artist, she explores the intersections of photography, projection design, installations, and video to craft immersive experiences that evoke reflection and connection. As a first-generation Eritrean American, her work is deeply rooted in community engagement and cultural heritage, focusing on preserving stories through documentaries, art installations, and providing a platform for storytelling to safeguard Eritrean history and culture.
She also explores the identity of a first-born daughter within the first-generation Eritrean American experience, delving into the duplexity of navigating two cultures. Through interactive dance, art experiences, and the fusion of visual art with live performance, she aims to inspire unity and cultural appreciation.
