South Dallas Cultural Center Celebrates Black Music Month with Major Group Exhibition Featuring 30 artists
Dallas, Texas — May 2026 — In honor of Black Music Month, the South Dallas Cultural Center will present a powerful multidisciplinary exhibition featuring more than 20 artists from across Texas whose works examine the cultural, historical, and emotional impact of Black music. The exhibition will be on view from May 22 through June 27, 2026.
Curated by Weyni Kahsay and co-curated by Lakeem Wilson, the exhibition brings together painting, photography, mixed media, installation, and immersive sound experiences that explore the influence of Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Gospel, and Spiritual music traditions. Through diverse artistic perspectives, participating artists reflect on themes of identity, memory, resistance, spirituality, celebration, and cultural preservation rooted in Black musical expression.​​​​​​​
The exhibition is organized into several thematic categories including: Hip Hop + R&B + Pop,  Jazz, Blues + Soul Music, Sound Engagement, Cultural Reflection Music, History, Gospel / Spiritual
In addition to visual artwork, guests will be guided throughout the hallways and exhibition spaces of the South Dallas Cultural Center for a fully immersive experience that blends visual art and sound. Visitors can scan QR codes and listen through headsets to curated audio selections connected to individual works and themes, creating an interactive journey that deepens the relationship between the artwork and the music that inspired it.
This exhibition highlights the ongoing legacy of Black music as both a creative force and a historical archive that continues to shape communities across Texas and beyond. By centering sound, storytelling, and visual interpretation, the exhibition offers audiences an opportunity to experience Black music through contemporary artistic expression.
