Curated by Weyni Kahsay at the South Dallas Cultural Center
Everyday Black Life is a multidimensional exploration of identity, memory, and cultural continuity across the African diaspora. Featuring ten artists from African, African American, Afro-Latin, and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds, the exhibition brings together painting, photography, and mixed media to reflect the depth and nuance of Black existence.
This exhibition is not centered on a single narrative. Instead, it offers a collective voice, one that moves fluidly between past and present, the personal and the shared, the ordinary and the monumental. It honors the beauty found in everyday moments while acknowledging the histories and experiences that shape them.
Through portraiture, archival imagery, nostalgia, music, and storytelling, Everyday Black Life invites viewers to consider how identity is formed, carried, and expressed. From childhood memories and community resilience to cultural icons and ancestral histories, each work contributes to a larger dialogue: who we are, where we come from, and how we continue to exist, create, and remember.
